The Plaza Hotel Wedding Closure: 11 Luxury NYC Wedding Venues to Consider Instead

October 15, 2026 | Alessandra Parks Photography

The Plaza Hotel has long been one of New York City's most recognizable wedding venues. Its location overlooking Central Park, historic ballrooms, and unmistakable old New York character have made it a favorite for couples planning an elegant Manhattan celebration.

Following the announcement that The Plaza will close in January 2027 for an extensive restoration expected to last at least four years, couples with upcoming weddings may now be facing the unexpected task of finding another venue.

Fortunately, Manhattan has no shortage of extraordinary historic properties. From private clubs along Fifth Avenue to landmark hotels and grand ballrooms, there are several venues worth considering for couples who were originally drawn to The Plaza.

As a New York City wedding photographer, I've had the opportunity to photograph celebrations at some of these properties and have developed a particular appreciation for the city's historic architecture and its relationship to wedding photography.

Here are 11 venues I would consider when looking for an alternative to The Plaza Hotel.

1. Lotte New York Palace

455 Madison Avenue | Midtown Manhattan

One of the strongest alternatives to The Plaza is Lotte New York Palace. The historic Villard Mansion, originally built in the 1880s, brings a European influence to the heart of Midtown Manhattan.

The property is known for its grand staircase, courtyard, and ornate interiors, with the Villard Ballroom offering a beautiful setting for a formal wedding reception.

I've photographed weddings at Lotte New York Palace, and what stands out to me is the range of locations available for portraits. The courtyard, historic architecture, and elegant interiors provide variety without ever needing to leave the property.

For couples who loved The Plaza's traditional architecture and sense of history, the Palace should be high on the list.

2. Metropolitan Club

One East 60th Street | Upper East Side

Just steps from Central Park, Metropolitan Club is perhaps one of the closest aesthetic comparisons to The Plaza.

Founded in 1891, this historic private club is known for its extraordinary marble staircase, richly detailed interiors, and grand entertaining rooms.

The architecture alone makes it a compelling choice for a formal New York wedding. Its interiors feel distinctly Gilded Age, with the scale and architectural detail that make traditional black-tie celebrations so beautiful.

For couples who were particularly drawn to The Plaza's Grand Ballroom, Metropolitan Club is well worth exploring.

3. The St. Regis New York

Two East 55th Street | Midtown Manhattan

The St. Regis New York has been a fixture of Fifth Avenue since 1904, and much of its appeal lies in how carefully it has retained its historic character.

From its elegant suites to its chandeliers and ornate interiors, the hotel offers the kind of classic New York setting that feels appropriate for a sophisticated, formal wedding.

I've photographed at The St. Regis and particularly love its interiors for bridal portraits. The architectural details, beautiful light, and rich textures work especially well with both digital and film photography.

For couples who want the experience of a landmark luxury hotel without moving away from Fifth Avenue, The St. Regis is an excellent consideration.

4. The Pierre

Two East 61st Street | Upper East Side

Located just across from Central Park, The Pierre is another natural alternative for couples who had their hearts set on The Plaza.

The hotel opened in 1930 and has remained one of Manhattan's most established addresses for formal celebrations.

Its Grand Ballroom and distinctive Rotunda are particularly well suited to weddings with elaborate florals, candlelight, and traditional black-tie attire.

The Pierre shares many of the qualities that make The Plaza appealing: a prestigious Fifth Avenue address, historic interiors, and the ability to host a grand New York wedding.

5. The University Club of New York

One West 54th Street | Midtown Manhattan

The University Club is one of Manhattan's most impressive historic private clubs, located just off Fifth Avenue.

Designed by McKim, Mead & White, the building is known for its Italian Renaissance-inspired architecture, soaring ceilings, marble columns, and extraordinary interiors.

Its library and formal rooms offer a setting that feels more like a historic European institution than a traditional event venue.

For couples who appreciate architecture and want a wedding with a strong sense of history, The University Club offers something particularly distinctive.

Private-club event policies and access requirements should be confirmed directly with the venue.

6. Cipriani

Multiple Manhattan Locations

Cipriani is another name worth considering for couples looking for a grand New York wedding, particularly those planning a larger celebration.

Cipriani 42nd Street is known for its soaring ceilings, marble columns, and monumental scale. The former bank building offers an impressive backdrop for large floral installations, long tables, and dramatic reception designs.

Cipriani 25 Broadway, in Lower Manhattan, offers another historic setting, with richly detailed architecture and an equally formal atmosphere.

While the aesthetic differs from The Plaza, both venues have the scale and architectural presence to accommodate an elaborate black-tie celebration.

For couples who prioritize a spectacular ballroom and a memorable guest experience, Cipriani belongs on the shortlist.

7. New York Athletic Club

180 Central Park South | Midtown Manhattan

Few venues offer a Central Park location quite like the New York Athletic Club.

Situated directly along Central Park South, the historic private club is especially appealing to couples who loved The Plaza's location and traditional New York atmosphere.

Its formal interiors and views overlooking the park provide a setting that feels established and distinctly Manhattan.

For couples who want to stay in the same immediate neighborhood as The Plaza, the New York Athletic Club is certainly worth considering.

As with other private clubs, couples should inquire directly about event eligibility and wedding arrangements.

8. 620 Loft & Garden

620 Fifth Avenue | Rockefeller Center

620 Loft & Garden offers something different from The Plaza's traditional ballroom setting, but its location and architecture make it an appealing alternative for a more intimate celebration.

Located above Fifth Avenue at Rockefeller Center, the rooftop garden overlooks St. Patrick's Cathedral and features manicured greenery, a reflecting pool, and some of Midtown's most recognizable architecture.

I've photographed a wedding here, and it's one of those venues where the surroundings do much of the work. The views, natural light, and rooftop setting provide a beautiful backdrop for portraits, while the space can be transformed for an intimate candlelit dinner.

For couples who appreciate European-inspired gardens and want a smaller, design-focused New York wedding, 620 Loft & Garden is a particularly interesting option.

9. Rainbow Room

30 Rockefeller Plaza | Midtown Manhattan

Rainbow Room is an iconic New York wedding venue with an entirely different architectural identity.

Located on the 65th floor of Rockefeller Center, the space is known for its Art Deco interiors, crystal chandeliers, and panoramic city views.

For couples who want a formal, glamorous Manhattan celebration but are open to moving away from the traditional Gilded Age aesthetic, Rainbow Room offers a remarkable setting.

Its architectural character is unmistakably New York, making it especially well suited to an elegant evening reception.

10. Gotham Hall

1356 Broadway | Midtown Manhattan

Gotham Hall is another excellent consideration for couples drawn to the scale of The Plaza's ballroom.

Originally constructed as a bank, the historic building features a dramatic domed ceiling, limestone columns, and an expansive main hall.

The architecture lends itself particularly well to ambitious floral designs and large-scale wedding productions.

While Gotham Hall doesn't offer the hotel experience of The Plaza, it provides a similarly impressive setting for couples whose priority is a grand reception space.

11. Harold Pratt House

58 East 68th Street | Upper East Side

For couples who love historic New York architecture but are considering a more intimate celebration, Harold Pratt House is a beautiful alternative.

Located on the Upper East Side, this historic mansion offers elegant interiors and the atmosphere of a private New York residence.

Its architectural details and traditional rooms lend themselves to a more understated, residential style of luxury.

For couples who want their wedding to feel like an elegant gathering in a historic Manhattan home rather than a large hotel ballroom, Harold Pratt House is worth exploring.

Choosing a New York Wedding Venue After The Plaza Closure

If your wedding was originally planned for The Plaza, finding another venue may feel especially difficult when you've already invested so much thought into the setting.

I would start by considering which elements of The Plaza mattered most to you.

If it was the Gilded Age architecture and grand interiors, Metropolitan Club, Lotte New York Palace, and The University Club are particularly strong options.

If the Fifth Avenue address and proximity to Central Park were most important, The Pierre, The St. Regis, and New York Athletic Club are natural places to begin.

And for couples who are open to a different interpretation of a classic New York wedding, venues like 620 Loft & Garden, Rainbow Room, and Cipriani offer their own distinct architectural character.

With The Plaza's closure expected to affect weddings beginning in 2027, I would recommend contacting venues as soon as possible to discuss available dates, capacity, and event requirements.
